PRSM Supports ICSC’s RetailGreen Conference

November 28, 2012

PRSM was actively involved in the RetailGreen Conference hosted by the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) in Phoenix this week.  First, PRSM Board President Paul Walsh and Director of Industry Programs Josh Witte represented PRSM at the ICSC-RILA-PRSM joint task meeting focused on mail recycling and green leasing among other topics.  The group’s purpose is to identify ways the members of all three associations can work together to develop better sustainable retail environments.

At the Conference, Josh Witte moderated the PRSM sponsored education session attended by approximately 50 people on Best Practices for a Major LED Retrofit Project in Retail which featured two retailers and two suppliers on the panel.  Panelist included  retailers Don Moseley of Walmart and Vance Olivier from Room&Board, classic home furnishings.  Suppliers were Lee Cush from Philips Lighting and Victoria Garten from General Electric.

The conclusion of the speakers was that retailers have numerous lighting options at various price points and it’s up to the retailer to decide when is the best time to make the switch to LED. It’s payback and the improvements in lighting quality certainly are worth consideration today. But, technology is changing quickly, so the “right time” to consider a change depends on the time and budget involved to make a move that supports the retailer’s  overall business needs.

PRSM’s engagement with other associations and ICSC & the Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) is another opportunity for PRSM to further the goals of its own sustainability initiative, assisting members with the resources and tools need to create sustainable retail environments.  PRSM’s Sustainability Council Co-Chair Maryella Pegnato also attended the conference so that she could share the latest information provided during all the education sessions with the Council members at their next meeting.
