PRSM Releases Green Cleaning Resource Guide
Guide Helps Retail FMs Source Environmentally Friendly Products

DALLAS – Feb. 7, 2013 The Professional Retail Store Maintenance Association, (PRSM), the authority on retail, multi-site facilities management, today launched a new resource designed to help the retail facilities manager evaluate and procure green cleaning agents and equipment and develop processes that create a more environmentally friendly retail store for customers, employees and the planet.

The “Retail Facilities Green Cleaning Guide” is a multi-faceted resource for facilities managers who manage cleaning programs, procure cleaning products and contract for cleaning services. Due to increased focus on the health effects of some cleaning agents, green building ratings systems (i.e. LEED) regard green cleaning initiatives as a critical component to today’s comprehensive sustainability program.

“Not only do studies show that cleanliness is the top atmospheric element customers frequently cite as important when they choose which store to frequent, it also helps protect employee health and reduce the public spread of illness,” said ISSA Executive Director John Garfinkel. “Because of the importance cleaning plays in store success and wellness, we are proud to help PRSM provide valuable tools to make it easier for facilities managers to identify the right cleaning products and services that meet their specific goals.”

The resource is segmented into separate content areas, focusing on:

  • High-level policy and procedural outlines, information on standards
  • Measurement and Benchmarks: guidance on what to measure, certifications provided by ISSA – the Worldwide Cleaning Industry Association
  • Leadership Defined and First Steps: Widely recognized and recommended elements of  green cleaning programs, and five options for getting started
  • Tools and Getting Involved: Templates, calculators, documents and other organization and data-collection tools
  • LEED Requirements
  • Case Studies, Reports, Articles and White Papers
  • Education and Conferences, Links

“Retailers are rapidly expanding the scope and reach of their sustainability programs. PRSM resources provide these materials to help retail facilities managers deliver on their company goals in support of a cleaner and safer shopping environment,” said PRSM Association Executive Director Patricia Dameron.

The SRC’s driving force is the Association’s Sustainability Council, formed in 2007, and consisting of retail and vendor members who take an active role in instituting green initiatives across the industry. The Council, in partnership with environmental consulting firm Ecoxera, has led the deployment of a wide variety of instructional tools and reports, including the:
