A large national retailer wanted to decrease their waste expense and increase their recycling revenue. The quantifiable goal was to reduce the percentage of waste expense to sales revenue.

Walmart has implemented an extensive solid waste landfill reduction/recycling program and numerous special waste management programs. This article provides a high-level view into these programs.

Waste Rightsizing
Waste and recycling costs are ever increasing as landfills charge more and as refunds for recycled materials slowly diminish. A restaurant generates a large percentage of wet waste, which increases weight and, therefore, the cost to haul and dispose of it. We were challenged with reducing our waste costs by $3 million.
