Walmart has implemented an extensive solid waste landfill reduction/recycling program and numerous special waste management programs. This article provides a high-level view into these programs.
Waste and recycling costs are ever increasing as landfills charge more and as refunds for recycled materials slowly diminish. A restaurant generates a large percentage of wet waste, which increases weight and, therefore, the cost to haul and dispose of it. We were challenged with reducing our waste costs by $3 million.
