Chainlinks U.S. National Retail Report Summer 2011
As this report went to press, the U.S. economy stood at a crossroads. Revised numbers from the Commerce Department painted a picture of a weakening economy during the first half of 2011. First quarter GDP growth was downgraded to just 0.4% and second quarter numbers came in at just 1.3%. Meanwhile, consumer spending, which had held its own even in the face of rising gas prices, finally fell in June—the first decline since September of 2009. Job cuts reached a 16-month high in July.
