Board of Directors has selected new officers for the 2016 – 2017 term. Under the new governance model adopted by PRSM, officer titles for 2016-2017 have been updated to reflect the new model. The new officers are:
- Chair: Leigh Pearson, RFMP, Director, Facility, Environmental & Procurement Services, Staples, Inc., Canada.
- Vice Chair: Kyle Brekke, Vice President of Facilities, Belk, Inc.
- Treasurer: Tom Bonnel, Vice President of Sales, MetroTech.
- Secretary: Karen Shriner, Esq., Director, Retail Facilities, Rite Aid Corporation.
Leigh Pearson is the first Canadian to take the helm of the PRSM Board. As Director, Facility, Environmental and Procurement Services for Staples Canada, Pearson has been with the company for 19 years and is responsible for almost 400 stores, warehouses and corporate offices. She received the Staples Soul Award for her contributions to sustainability and the community and, in 2013 Staples Canada received PRSM Association’s Innovation in Sustainability Award. She also holds the Retail Facility Management Professional (RFMP) designation, a mark of excellence achieved by an elite group of retail facility management professionals.
“I am excited about the future of PRSM,” commented Pearson. “I want to thank the outgoing leaders for their service and the excellent work the Board has done to position PRSM as an industry leader. I look forward to working with the PRSM Board, our members and the PRSM staff as we continue to enhance the services the association provides, to add new members and grow PRSM’s international presence.”
The Association membership has elected two new retail board members to three-year terms and one retail alternate to a one-year term. New retail directors include:
- Jonathan Bauer, Senior Director, Store Development, Gap, Inc.;
- Matthew Jacques, Manager of Maintenance and CAM Services, BJ’s Wholesale Club
- Ken Engle, Director of Real Estate and Construction, DFC Global Corporation - retail alternate.
The new supplier board member elected for a three-year term, and one supplier alternate, elected to a one-year term, on the board include:
- Stacy Brown, Director Strategic Planning and Development, Global Facility Management and Construction;
- Wayne Knaub, Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing, RSM Maintenance - supplier alternate.
The following board members will continue to serve:
- Immediate Past Chair: Bryan Walker, Store Facilities Manager, The Container Store (Ex-Officio).
- Norm Dutcher, President, Integra Service Group, Inc.
- Bruce Falke, Director of Sales, Commercial Fire, Inc.
- Donna Fuoco, Director of Customer Solutions, Cintas Managed Solutions.
- Ashley Hudler, Planned Maintenance Manager, Lowe’s Home Centers, LLC.
- Beth Huneycutt, Division Vice President, Facilities Maintenance & Store Services, Family Dollar Stores, Inc.
- Ann Moran, Sr. Vice President of Business Development and Marketing, National Accounts, Engineering Excellence National Accounts, LLC.
The entire 15 PRSM Board officers and directors will be seated during the Board’s full meeting on Monday, April 25, at PRSM2016 National Conference, in Long Beach, CA.
James “Jim” Land, President and CEO of Image, Baltimore, MD, passed away suddenly earlier this week. Funeral services will be Friday, April 1 at the Duda-Ruck Funeral Home in Dundalk, MD, with viewing from 12:00-2:00 p.m. and services to follow immediately thereafter.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made in Jim’s name to WorldHelp.net. Jim was passionate about helping children around the world and Image Integrated Services has helped thousands of children through its donations to World Help.
Jim worked in facilities management for 20 years, was an active PRSM member for five years, and Image is a sponsor of PRSM2016 National Conference. The PRSM family expresses its sincere condolences to the Land family.

Last weekend, PRSM member, Apple, Inc., opened the doors to one of the first "next-generation" Apple Stores to land stateside. The new store features a logo-less facade, custom wooden wall installations and massive 37-foot TV display — rumored to cost $1.5 million — that ties everything together.

On Monday, California Governor Gerry Brown reached an agreement with state legislators to raise the minimum wage in California to $15 by 2022. Under the plan, the state’s minimum wage, currently one of the highest in the nation at $10 an hour, would rise to $10.50 in 2017, $11 in 2018 and a dollar each year through 2022. The proposal had been headed to a statewide referendum. It's now expected to be approved by the state assembly. Read more here.
The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has a new podcast featuring experts from Thomas & Betts, highlighting the importance of properly functioning emergency lighting systems and explaining the requirements and applicable installation codes. In addition, the podcast gives a brief overview of how the latest technology can help ensure code compliance.
Accompanying the podcast, NEMA has provided the NEMA Guide to Emergency Lighting which has information on emergency lighting systems, related codes, and regulations. It is designed to provide a basic understanding of emergency lighting unit and exit sign equipment and how it functions.

This week, all retailer primary members will receive an invitation to respond to the Exterior Services Survey. This survey will be collecting information from retailers related to costs and labor hours of exterior services, factors that affect the costs, and company demographics. This information will be used to build an Exterior Services Benchmarking Snapshot and help the Exterior Services Planning Tool that is being developed. In the March/April of PRSM Magazine, the article, “Expert Give Tips on Maximizing Trade Show ROI,” Kevin Herrmann, Manager of Maintenance for The Fresh Market and Matthew Jacques, Manager of Maintenance for BJ’s Wholesale Club, Inc. share their perspectives on how retailers’ prefer to meet suppliers at conferences. Some suggestions are for suppliers to have someone knowledgeable in the booth as well as retailers should be clear about who makes the decisions at your company.
Jodie Susie, Vice President of Integrated Solutions, FrontStreet Facility Solutions and Kevin Smith, COO, Ferrandino & Sons, will share their experiences as the supplier at a conference. They advise some things to remember for suppliers are don’t be overly aggressive and, for retailers, consider contributing to educational platforms as a retailer’s experience is valuable and should be shared with the membership.
