Hundreds of PRSM members packed the Indianapolis Convention Center today to kick off PRSM2017 Mid-Year Conference. Pre-conference activities include a PRSM/VOA Charity Work Day, a behind the scenes tour of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, education/networking sessions, and the welcome reception.
Legendary football coach Lou Holtz will be the keynote speaker at Thursday’s General Session. Dozens of education sessions, networking events and an exhibition hall with more than 200 supplier booths will round out this year’s event. PRSM Retailer, H-E-B has re-opened 30 of its grocery and convenience stores in the Houston metro area that had closed during Hurricane Harvey. While H-E-B FMs worked fast to re-open stores, H-E-B also donated more than $1 million to the relief fund, has been operating two mobile kitchens, operating mobile pharmacies and distributing food and supplies to survivors and relief workers. The list of retailers stepping up to help hurricane victims reads like a who’s who of PRSM members.
Companies have pledged $113 million to relief efforts as of Thursday afternoon, according to an estimate from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Fifty-two companies had donated $1 million or more. Click here to see a list of companies.
Over 4,000 more stores are opening than closing among big chains in 2017. As the “retail apocalypse” canard continues to grab the odd headline in the media, the data and the facts are consistently telling us quite a different story: a story of an industry in transition, but still growing. The most recent retail sales figures released by the Census Bureau were up a robust 4.2 percent year-on-year in July.
